The Space Between

A Collaborative Project by Carol Neiger (painting) & Alden Solovy (psalm)

How might we experience the inner terrain of a psalm? My interest in exploring the rich texture of psalms led me to Alden Solovy, a modern-day poet-liturgist, to explore the space between poetic prayer and our inner landscapes. Together we began to examine the power of psalms to sustain and to transform. We looked at the spiritual impact of particular forms —lamentation, inspiration, affirmation — and their resonances between sorrow and renewal driven in part by our own personal experiences, as well as the communal experience of October 7. i created the first of many sketches which inspired Alden’s ‘Everyday Psalm.’ The dialogue between the psalm and the sketches yielded the triptych ‘Psalm 92.’ The first panel embodies lamentation, the third celebrates affirmation and praise, and the central piece represents faith and hope: the space of inspiration between pain and redemption. This collaboration reflects our belief that art and poetry serve as vessels for healing, reflection, and connection.
